Sizes

Two people sleeping on a full sized (double) mattress only have as much personal sleeping space as a baby in a crib. It is recommended that bed partners buy a mattress no smaller than a queen mattress. Deciding between a King and Queen is a matter of personal choice. Remember that a full mattress is the same length as a twin and that a King and Queen offer an additional 5 inches in length.

FAQ's

Q: Can I use my old box springs with my new mattress?
A: You should always replace your box springs with your new mattress. Besides the fact that box springs are essential to the comfort and life of the mattress, manufacturers will void the warranty of any mattress not on the proper box spring.

Q: Do I need to use a special frame for today's mattresses.
A: You do not need a special frame but manufacturers require proper support to maintain the warranty. Check your warranty card for the proper support details or ask our sleep specialists.

Q: I'm seeing a body impression on my mattress. Is that a sign of a defect?
A: Many of today's top quality mattresses use advanced foams and fibers that are designed to be softer and more comfortable while ensuring the proper support for good health. By cradling your body, these materials relieve pressure and prevent excessive tossing and turning. For that reason, you will likely notice some body impressions on the mattress surface. These impressions are normal and shouldn't be considered a sign that something is wrong with your mattress.

Q: How do I tell when it is time to replace my current mattress?
A: Like a favorite chair or old pair of shoes, your mattress can feel comfortable long after has lost it's ability to provide the proper support for good health. Consider the following:

• Is your mattress 5 to 7 years old?
• You wake up with stiffness, numbness, aches or pains.
• You had a better night's sleep somewhere other than your own bed (such as a hotel or friend's home)
• Your mattress shows physical signs of age (lumps, worn fabric, squeaks, sags etc.)

Q: Are there mattresses available that can be flipped?
A: Yes. Klingmans is the exclusive Michigan dealer for Shifman Handmade mattresses, the finest 2 sided mattresses available in the United States. Theses mattresses offer the option of flipping giving you twice the life of any conventional one sided mattress by allowing you to spread wear between both sides.

Glossary

Box Spring: A box spring is designed to support an innerspring mattress by distributing weight and acting as a shock absorber. A mattress and box spring together comprise a sleep set and both experience share in the wear and tear over time.

Coil Count: The number of coils in an innerspring unit. A high coil count alone does not indicate better quality. Firmness support and durability are determined by the design of the coil, the gauge of wire used and the way the coil is engineered. The count is usually based on the number of coils in a full-size unit.

Density: The weight per cubic foot of foam. Density is independent of firmness but an important indicator of foam quality.

Foundation: Similar to a box spring in that it supports the mattress but foundations are generally contain a wood and foam surface that offers little or no shock absorption.

Gauge: The thickness of the wire used in mattresses and box springs. The lower the gauge (number) the heavier (thicker) the wire.

HD Foam: High density foam. Higher density foam will offer a greater life of resiliency without flattening.

ILD: Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) is a measurement of foam firmness. Firmness is independent of foam density, although it is often thought that higher density foams are firmer. It is possible to have high density foams that are soft – or low density foams that are firm, depending on the ILD specification. ILD specification relates to comfort. It is a measurement of the surface feel of the foam. ILD is measured by indenting (compressing) a foam sample 25 percent of its original height. The amount of force (in pounds) required to indent the foam is its 25 percent ILD measurement. The more force required, the firmer the foam. Flexible foam ILD measurements range from 10 pounds (supersoft) to about 80 pounds (very firm).

Insulator: A tough fiber padding, wire or netting that separates innerspring mattress coils from the cushioning assisting in keeping comfort layers intact.

Latex: A natural foam product derived from the rubber tree used generally in the most premium mattresses because of it's long life and resiliency.

Low Profile/High Profile: Refers to the height of the box spring or foundation. With today's thicker mattresses many people choose a lower profile foundation to keep the total bedding set height lower. Generally a standard foundation height is 9" and a low profile foundation is 5.25".

Memory Foam: A common name for visco-elastic foam. Temperature sensitive, slow recovery urethane foam that conforms to the body and distributes pressure according to body heat and weight. It comes in many thicknesses, densities, and different levels of softness and firmness. Visco foam may be used as the primary construction material, or as a component of the comfort system of an innerspring mattress. An additional benefit of memory foams is that they are dust mite resistant.

Offset Coil: A coil that is flat on the ends rather than cylindrical. This shape allows the coils to hinge like the spine of a book and offers greater life, strength and support. This construction also reduces any chance of spring noise.

Pillow Top: A mattress construction in which the top of the mattress is finished with pad of various cushioning materials to reduce pressure points and add comfort.

Pocket Coils: Generally a lighter gauge coil that is enclosed in a fabric “pouch" connected to the coils surrounding it by glue. Most pocketed coil mattresses have a much greater quantity of coils than conventional coil beds due to their lighter gauge and smaller size.

Pressure Points: The points in the body at which blood flow decreases or stops due to pressure against the body. Often described as pins and needles.

Split Queen Box: Some manufacturers are now splitting the box spring in two to allow for better maneuverability in tight spaces such as stairwells or narrow hallways. Each box measures 30" by 80".

Tempered: A heat treatment used on wire that increases strength and assures that a spring will return to it's original shape after repeated use and compression.

Ticking: The outer fabric covering the mattress. Often these fabrics are woven damasks or advanced fabrics designed for greater air flow and comfort.

Visco Foam: Also known as "memory foam." Temperature sensitive, slow recovery urethane foam that conforms to the body and distributes pressure according to body heat and weight. Not all memory foams are created equal, but come in a variety of thicknesses, densities, and different levels of softness and firmness. Visco foam may be used as the primary construction material, or as a component of the comfort system of an innerspring mattress.
