About Brownstreet

Way up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, about an hour or so south of the Canadian border, there’s a little town called Whitefield.

It’s the kind of place where you still see bunting on the town square bandstand on the 4th of July. Where the winters are cold and hard and beautiful. Where pretty much everyone knows how to change a tire and would stop to help you if you didn’t.

In this little town of Whitefield, you’ll find an old factory where craftsmen make the kind of furniture that stays in the family for generations. Simply designed and crafted with expert hands - it’s furniture made the way things were made back when quality still mattered.

If you’re ever up in our neck of the woods, we’d be happy to show you around. You can even try a cup of Janine’s coffee - if you dare. We’re easy enough to find – we’re just off Main on Brown Street.

A history of Brown Street Furniture

We started making furniture back in 1950 down in Norfolk, CT. And for the first 30-some odd years, we made it for other companies, universities, hotels and the like. Some call it contract manufacturing. Now, when we look back, we think of it more as practice. We were getting ourselves ready.

In 1967, we decided it was time for a change of scenery, so we packed up and headed North to where the best wood was. We bought an old factory space on Brown Street in a little lumber town called Whitefield, NH. And in the shadow of Mount Washington, we got down to business making great furniture.

By the time the eighties rolled around, we'd gotten pretty good at making a quality piece of furniture for a fair and honest price. We decided it was time to start making that furniture for ourselves. We changed our name to Brown Street Furniture and soon introduced the Shaker Pine collection. The simple, delicate style and quality craftsmanship struck a chord. Soon, the business began to grow.

Next came the high-end Sculptured Oak collection. And then, in 1989, we introduced our famous Manchester Cherry collection. As folks came to try the new product lineup, we started to build a reputation for good, old-fashioned New England craftsmanship, fair prices and friendly service. And every day, we work to live up to that reputation.

Since those first lines came out, we've continued to grow. And we will continue to introduce new lines, invest in new technology and focus on the things that got us here. And all those things boil down to one simple aim: make damn good furniture.

WHY BROWN STREET?:

"In matters of fashion, swim with the current. In matters of principle, stand like a rock."
- Thomas Jefferson

The way we see it, finishes are like fashion - to each his own. It’s why we offer more than 30 different stain and paint finishing options. On the other hand, details like dovetails and mortise and tenon joints? They aren’t up for debate.
